Can adults learn how to sing?

How good you are and how fast you are depends largely on how you train, but you can learn to sing skillfully reliably, with power, beauty and great ease, at any age. You may feel like singing well, but also be skeptical that it's worth a try for several reasons. Yes, you can learn as an adult, but it will be harder for you to find the free time to develop the skill without a certain level of discipline. With a little dedication and a lot of hard work, anyone of any age can learn to sing.

You may not always utter words exactly as you would when you are speaking, so learning to sing clearly, without inhibiting your singing voice, is very important in your singing journey. If you've started learning to sing as an adult, you're probably singing better than you did a few weeks or months ago. It's important to remember how far you've come and don't get stuck with how much more you need to learn. The learning process tends to change between feeling like you have it and getting that fantastic sense of accomplishment and overcoming another challenge or obstacle soon after.

Now, for some people, learning to read and write may be a little easier depending on a variety of factors, such as genetics, whether their home environment promotes academic performance, etc. So how is it that adults often assume that they are “too old” to learn to sing? A big part of this is that many of the vocalists we see in popular music seem to be young in their teens or twenties. The worst thing that could have happened was a reaction like “Sorry dude, but there is no way you can learn to sing. So how does a self-proclaimed “bad singer” learn to sing? “A lot of people who have difficulty singing try to sing with their talking voices the voice they are used to using,” says Rutkowski.

And sometimes they can be a good start to try the water and find out if learning to sing is something you're really passionate about. So, once you've learned to use your voice to sing, does that mean you're ready to audition for American Idol? Not necessarily, Rutkowski adds. If you've ever wanted to write your own songs or understand your favorite songs better, music theory and learning to play will certainly help you do so. From there, finding opportunities to sing like local bands, choirs and open mic nights will make you realize how far you've come in your adult singing lessons.
